Shining Stars Pink Bear

To help astronomers locate the stars, the sky is divided up into 88 areas, these are called constellations.
Each constellation is associated with a pattern of the brighter stars within it, and consists of a defined area of sky surrounding that pattern. Each constellation has a name, of course, usually mythological in origin. Most make their appearances in the Southern Hemisphere at different times of the year, some all year round.
We have chosen 6 constellations out of the 88 available for you to position your star in.

The constellations available are: Andromeda - Cassiopeia - Draco - Hercules - Pegasus - Perseus

There will be further Constellations added that are visible in the Southern Hemisphere all year round and we will advise these as soon as possible.

Currently, Australians must purchase their star naming rights from the Australian International Star Registry Website. The least expensive star package costs A$198 and comes with an unframed certificate and star chart.

Russ have purchased 1/2 million stars from the International Star Registry so far. The International Star Registry has sold over 2 million stars in 10 years.

The International Star Registry began in 1979 when the founder wanted to name a star for his young daughter. He was told that by policy astronomers do not name stars, but further research showed that there was nothing to prevent him from starting a star naming service himself.

ISR was launched as an unusual gift idea, which enables you to express your sentiments towards someone.
Since that time over a million stars have been named worldwide for celebrities, dignitaries and loved ones.

Astronomers do not use the names we designate to stars but always refer to them by position or catalogue number.
Naming a star is therefore not a scientific venture but a symbolic gesture of regard, friendship or love.
There are 100,000 million stars in our Milky Way galaxy alone.
Of these, just 16 million have been catalogued by position and brightness and it is to one of these previously un-named stars that you will designate the name of your choice.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Am I buying the star?

No.
We do not own the star, so we cannot sell it to you.
This is like adopting the star.
This star is associated with that special someone you name it for.
It is something you can point at, to know that there is something special out there for you.

Can I see the star?

The stars can be seen with the aid of a telescope.

What if the name of the star I have chosen already exists?

This does not matter. If you think of a telephone directory, you will see many people have the same name, but each is an individual with their own address and telephone number.
Similarly, each star has its own “address” in the form of its co-ordinates and its own “telephone number” in the form of its HGSC identification number.

Do you name the same star more than once?

No.
Quite simply this is because in our catalogue there are some 16 million discrete stars.
In over 25 years of business, the International Star Registry has helped over 1 million people to name stars.
It would make no sense to re-name these 1 million stars when 15 million remain unnamed.

Will astronomers call the star by its new name?
No.
In professional astronomical and scientific circles the star you name will be referred to either by telescope co-ordinates or by identity number.

What can I call the star?

First names and full names are very popular choices and are always suitable for inclusion in the Register but inspired creativity is welcomed!
The one limit we have is a maximum of 35 characters inclusive of punctuation and spaces.

How often is the Register published?

ISR periodically publish a register, Your Place in the Cosmos, years and lists the names registered since publication of the previous register.
In the past a register was published only every 2-3 years, but now with Russ selling this range it will undoubtedly be more frequently.

I have seen another company offering to name stars - why should I use the International Star Registry?

Since the internet came into being, a number of outfits have sprung up trying to copy what we do, offering such things as A3 or small A4 certificates, sometimes in cheap frames.
Some have disappeared after a year or so.
We at the International Star Registry have been in business for over 25 years, and are committed to the compilation and maintenance of our star catalogue of over a million star names.

Customers of the International Star Registry include members of Royal Families, Cabinet Ministers, major film producers, actors and television personalities. Corporate customers have included the BBC, BT, Sony, Disney, IBM, Warner Records & the Ford Motor Company among many. Ours is the catalogue where the “Stars” are named.

Our distinctive Certificates have graced official residences from the White House to Downing Street; are on display in the homes of Hollywood; and have appeared in films and TV shows throughout the world, from Oprah Winfrey through to “Coronation Street”, “Friends” and “The West Wing” - and in the opening credits of “Cheers”!
